When in Surabaya, climb Ijen!

There are three reasons why you shouldn't miss climbing Ijen.

First, there's the famous blue fire (there are only two places in the world you can see it). Most people start climbing Ijen as early as 1 am. Why? 'Coz Ijen's blue fire can only be seen until 5am, so we need to reach the top before that. (Sorry, my Samsung phone cam couldn't capture the blue fire - in fact, it's no good in capturing anything in the dark at all 😢).

Second, once you've seen the blue flames, you can wait for the sunrise view which is as spectacular as any sunrises on any mountains. You can even get the glimpses of Bali Island as the sun rises.

Third, you'll get to see the spectacular crater of Ijen itself being unveiled as the sun brightens the area. As you can see in this photo, spectators were lining up along the mouth of the crater to enjoy the amazing finale as the sun rises higher.

Besides the blue flames, Ijen is famous for its sulphur mines. Seen in the next picture are the sulphur vents, where most of the sulphur miners are working at, and also where the blue fire can be seen between 2-5 am.

So what if you are not a mountain climber or not fit to climb a mountain? Nothing is impossible these days. With an extra IDR700k to 1M (based on negotiation), you can always get someone to take you up and down the mountain in a cart as in the following picture.

Now, what's stopping you?
